What is the income limit for Medi-Cal 2022?

In 2022, the Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance (or MMMNA) in California is $3,435 per month. If a non-applicant spouse has monthly income under this amount, then income can be transferred from the applicant spouse to the non-applicant spouse to raise their monthly income to this level.

What is MMMNA?

The Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance (or MMMNA) is a California Medi-Cal rule that becomes important between legally married couples where one spouse requires Medicaid and requires institutional care (skilled nursing facility or a nursing home); and the other spouse is relatively healthy.

What is the maximum income to qualify for Medi-Cal?
Is Medi-Cal based on gross or net income?

All of an applicant’s income is considered for monthly income. Medi-Cal eligibility is based on monthly income, not annual income.

What is spousal impoverishment Medi-Cal?

Spousal impoverishment rules are federal Medicaid regulations that are intended to prevent non-applicant spouses from becoming poverty-stricken in order for their applicant spouses to qualify for long-term care Medicaid, or Medi-Cal in the State of California.

What is Community Spouse Resource Allowance

In California the Community Spouse Resource Allowance (CSRA) is used when someone is applying for long-term care through Medi-Cal. While Medi-Cal does require that an applicant use his or her assets and income first before receiving aid, the federal government wants to ensure that the spouse has enough assets and income to live on.
